Brewers Blackbird

Project Description

Built in 1837 by George B. Rousseau, this Ancaster building was once owned by painter Frank Panabaker. Now a designated heritage building, it has been renovated and turned into what is now Brews Blackbird — retaining many original features — by owner Andy Kershaw and brewmaster Ken Wood whose automated system won a silver medal at the 2021 Canadian Brewing Awards.

Brewers Blackbird is a unique project aimed at revitalizing a historic site while celebrating the art of brewing. Located in Ancaster, a community known for its rich history and charming architecture, this development pays homage to the region’s brewing heritage. The expansion on the east side of the historic building incorporates modern elements, designed to showcase the brewing equipment used in beer production, incorporating floor-to-ceiling windows that blend contemporary aesthetics with the building’s classic architecture. This thoughtful blend of old and new reflects a commitment to preserving the past while embracing innovation in the craft beer industry.

Urban Solutions was retained to complete a Minor Variance in order to facilitate this development.
