Project Description

UrbanSolutions secured Final Site Plan Amendment approval and Minor Variances to facilitate the renovation and adaptive re-use of the historic Rousseau House in Ancaster. The project included significant upgrades to the existing heritage building—built in 1837 by George B. Rousseau and once owned by painter Frank Panabaker—while thoughtfully integrating new elements such as an office space, a microbrewery, and an expanded kitchen. These improvements supported the transformation of the site into Brewers Blackbird Kitchen and Brewery, now operated by owner Andy Kershaw and brewmaster Ken Wood, whose automated brewing system won a silver medal at the 2021 Canadian Brewing Awards.

The development celebrates Ancaster’s rich history while introducing a modern craft-brewing experience to Wilson Street East. The east-side expansion incorporates contemporary design features, including floor-to-ceiling windows that showcase the brewing equipment and create a visual connection between the public realm and the brewing process. This carefully balanced blend of old and new exemplifies how adaptive re-use can revitalize a heritage property, enhance the streetscape, and bring renewed purpose to lands designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act.

Overall, the Brewers Blackbird project illustrates how adaptive re-use can breathe new life into a heritage site, enhance the public realm, and celebrate both the history and future of craft brewing in the community.
